The area under sunflower in Turkey will decrease
Turkish farmers in the season-2024/25 will reduce the planted areas under sunflower – from 750 thsd ha in 2023/24 MY to 690 thsd ha. This forecast was made by the analysts of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Experts note that the decline will be caused by the decline in the profitability of the oilseed production in the country, most farmers will include other crops in their crop rotation in the hope of higher profits.

“The sunflower planting campaign in Turkey for 2024/25 MY will start in late March and will be completed by May,” the USDA said.
At the same time, the agency expects the harvest to increase from 1.55 mln tonnes in 2023/24 MY to 1.675 mln tonnes. The growth, according to experts, will be due to improved yields, which last year were seriously reduced due to drought...

NEW DELHI/MAPUTO. Smaller acreages in Gujarat are causing forecasts for the summer crop in India to shrink. In Mozambique, meanwhile, sowing has been completed, but a tropical storm is expected in parts of the country.

Gloomy crop forecast for Gujarat

With the fall in prices in recent weeks, Indian market players are hoping for an increase in export demand. Reports that freight costs are declining again could further boost the buying interest of foreign buyers and hulled sesame seeds in particular are in demand.

Nevertheless, it can be assumed that prices will continue to fall with the arrival of the summer crop. Domestic demand is moderate in the summer months, which is why even the decline in cultivation in Gujarat is unlikely to cause a supply shortage. So far, 30,494 h...

Despite increased production forecasts, rapeseed prices continue to rise
In the March report, USDA experts increased the forecast of world rapeseed production in 2023/24 MR by 0.7 to 88.1 (88.82) million tons, in particular for Ukraine - by 0.1 to 4.4 million tons, Russia - by 0 ,1 to 4.2 million tons, India - by 0.5 to 12.5 million tons. The forecast for the export of rapeseed from the Russian Federation was increased by 0.1 to 0.7 million tons, but it is unlikely to be fulfilled due to the export ban.

The authorities of the Russian Federation have extended the ban on the export of rape until August 31, 2024, in order to provide raw materials to local enterprises. Exports to the EAEU countries and deliveries by rail and road through the Transbaikal checkpoint on the border with China are not subject to the ban.

Against the background of the ban on exports from the Russian Federation, the reduction of supplies from Ukraine and the increase in canola prices in Canada, quotes for rape continue to grow.

Yesterday, May rape futures on the Paris MATIF rose by 1.8% to €430.75/t or $471/t (+3.2% for the week, +3.1% for the month).

  • May canola futures on the Winnipeg exchange rose 3.5% for the week to CAD 616/t or $457/t (+2.7% on the month) amid stronger exports and rising palm oil prices...

Chinese Grains&Oils Congress will bring together top speakers on the grain, oilseed markets and logistics
APK-Inform news agency, in partnership with APK-Inform Asia, is expanding the geography of international events and announcing the Chinese Grains&Oils Congress, April 10-12. The venue will be Shanghai, the largest city and financial center of China.

As the largest buyer of agricultural products, China continues to exert significant influence, serving as the primary trading partner for over 140 countries and regions worldwide. In the years 2023 and early 2024, we've witnessed China's concerted efforts to strengthen and expand partnerships within the agricultural sector, particularly with Central Asian nations like Kazakhstan. These partnerships mark a new phase of development, encompassing advancements in agriculture, logistics, scientific and technical collaboration, as well as substantial investments. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are also emerging as key players in this evolving landscape.

In addition, increasing demand and diversifying the geography of purchases of agricultural products, China began the process of resuming grain trade with Australia, increased supplies of grain and oilseeds from North and South America, and continues to actively trade grains, oilseeds, and vegetable oils with Ukraine.

Recognizing the pivotal role of China in the global economy, logistics, and agri-food system, we invite participants in the grain and oilseed markets to take part in the Chinese Grains&Oils Congress and discuss the preliminary results of 2023/24 MY, as well as prospects for the next season, on one global platform. The timing of this congress is strategically chosen to enhance the depth and breadth of discussions, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among industry experts and stakeholders.

Vopak commissions 40,000m³ of capacity for bio-bunkering in Singapore
Global tank storage company Vopak has commissioned 40,000m³ of capacity for bio-bunkering at its Sebarok Terminal in Singapore.

Located close to the eastern part of Singapore – where a large amount of bunkering activity takes place – the terminal’s additional capacity would be used for blending biofuels into marine fuels, the company said on 26 February.

In addition to increasing the terminal’s storage capacity, Vopak said its existing pipeline system had been converted to a dedicated biofuel blending service.
In response to increasing demand for biofuel blending and storage solutions – following multiple biofuel trials with customers – the company said its Sebarok Terminal had the potential to repurpose part of its existing capacity for biofuels.

“Our vision for Sebarok Terminal is to be a sustainable multi-fuels hub to strengthen Singapore’s position as the top bunkering hub,” Vopak president of business unit Singapore Rob Boudestijn said.
“This development can facilitate the entry of more biofuels companies to diversify the supply chain for marine biofuels and accelerate the decarbonisation of the shipping industry.”

Vopak has allocated €1bn (US$1.08bn) to expand its global portfolio investments towards new energies and sustainable feedstocks by 2030...

Sunflower seeds: nearly 14 million mt in Ukraine
SOFIA/KYIV. Agricultural imports from Russia have come under fire as the European Commission seeks steps to support farmers and tensions are boiling over in Poland. Estimates state that Ukraine may produce 13.5-13.9 million mt of sunflower seeds this year.

Imports from Russia under fire

As Bulgaria's production turned out to be rather disappointing local processors have little option but to rely on cheap raw seed imports from Ukraine this season. Contrary to this, the farmers are, however, pushing for import restrictions. The current compromise is that sunflower seed imports from Ukraine have been subject to licences in Bulgaria since December.

Yet, the broader picture tells a different story as the EU is virtually being flooded with cheap
agri-food imports, not only from Ukraine but also from Russia. Traders...

Argentina increased soybean and sunflower processing in January
In January 2024, about 2.1 million tons of soybeans were processed at Argentine oil extraction facilities, the industrial chamber of grain and oilseed exporters CIARA-CEC calculated. They estimated the figure was up 10.5% on December and January 2023 levels.

“During this period, the utilization of processing capacity in the country amounted to 36% of the existing potential against 32% in the previous year,” the report said.

In addition, experts note that in January the volume of sunflower seed processing in Argentina rose to the maximum value in the last five months – 218 thousand tons.

According to the forecasts of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in the season-2023/24 in Argentina will be harvested 4.1 million tons of sunflower (5.019 million tons in 2022/23 MY) and 50 million tons of soybeans (25 million tons), and processed 3.85 million tons of seed (4 million tons) and 35.5 million tons of beans (30.318 million tons).
