Grains and oilseeds: vile attack sparks renewed concerns
Excessive rain and frost have driven up Europe’s wheat quotations. In parts of France, Germany and Poland the cold snap is critical as the winter wheat is in an advanced state. The situation is similar to last year in France as wheat prices also rose at the start of the harvest. Too little rain is, by contrast, being reported in the southern parts of Russia, which is giving rise to concerns. If this situation persists the crop may very well be impacted. EU and US wheat quotations have risen by 3% and have returned...

Oil prices fell last week on easing tensions in the Middle East, but rose this week amid data on the U.S. economy, declining U.S. crude inventories and stronger demand for vegetable oils used in biodiesel production.

According to S&P Global, business activity in the US fell to a 4-month low in April, which led to a decline in the dollar. Usually, in such periods, investors look for alternative assets, so the demand for oil increases.

June Brent oil futures on the London ICE Futures exchange rose by 0.8% to $88/barrel (+2.3% for the month), and May WTI oil futures on the New York NYMEX rose by 0.8% to $88/barrel from Monday 0.7% to $82.8/barrel (+1.7% for the month).

According to the EIA's weekly report, as of April 19, crude oil stocks in the US decreased by 6.37 million barrels, although analysts expected their increase by 2 million barrels. At the same time, distillate stocks increased by 1.6 million barrels, and gasoline stocks decreased by 634,000 barrels, while according to forecasts they were supposed to decrease by 1.75 million barrels. US crude oil production during April 13-19 remained at 13.1 million bpd, slightly below the recently set record of 13.3 million bpd...

New trends of oilseeds market in 2024/25. Forecast
Rapeseed. The 2023 Ukrainian rapeseed production was unprecedentedly. The export of rapeseed and its processing also reached a record. In 2024, UkrAgroConsult expects a slight decrease in rapeseed area (-6%) and production (-10%), but the numbers are still record high.
EU demand for rapeseed from the 2024 harvest is growing. Demand from local crushers has also increased, which is quite unusual for the rapeseed market, so high crush rates are expected.

Soybeans. After a significant decline, a new soybean boom has begun in Ukraine. Soybeans are a new high margin crop for Ukrainian farmers.
UkrAgroConsult forecast of 2024 soybean market
  • an increase in soy area in 2024, mainly at the expense of corn;
  • soybeans have started to compete with SFS for acreage, which is a very new trend for Ukraine;
  • an increase in soy crushing, as the available specialized soybean industry in Ukraine is able to crush the entire soybean crop.
Sunflower. UkrAgroConsult forecasts a gradual recovery in acreage after a sharp decline due to the war. For the 2024 harvest, UkrAgroConsult expects an increase in area, mainly at the expense of wheat.

Sunflower oil production in the world is growing and “breathing down the neck” of palm oil
Previously, sunflower oil was in third place in global trade, but today it has risen to second place. Palm oil is on the first place. This may be due to the fact that in recent years sunflower oil has been much cheaper than other types.

This was stated by Julia Garkavenko, Head of Analytical Department at UkrAgroConsult, at the Black Sea Grain. Kyiv 2024 conference.

Having studied many countries of the Black Sea and Danube regions, we noticed that the growth rate of global sunseed trade is only 30%. At the same time, the growth rate of sunflower oil trade is almost 70%. Therefore, it is likely that in 5 years the entire sunseed trade will be reoriented to the export of processed products.

Julia Garkavenko does not rule out that all countries will process only the sunseed that they can grow themselves.

The analyst noted that Ukraine has lost its main markets for sunflower oil, including China, and has focused entirely on Europe. The lost markets are now occupied by Russia, so we need to try very hard to get them back.

Panama Canal officials expect drought to end soon and normal operations to resume by 2025
Drought conditions at the Panama Canal are expected to end soon with normal operations resuming by 2025, according to canal officials quoted by Freight Waves.
Ships faced long delays last year at the Panama Canal – one of the world’s busiest trade routes linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans – as shallow water levels caused by drought conditions reduced the number of vessels able to pass through it.

With around half of all container volumes from China and East Asia passing through the 80km Panama Canal to the US East Coast, the drought and subsequent operational impact had led to increased delays at the Port of Savannah from an average of three days last May to nearly nine in late March, the 15 April report said.

The state-owned Panama Canal Authority (ACP) had now signalled a return to normal operations, allocating three extra transit slots to Panamax vessels on 25 March – bringing the total number of reservations to 27/day, the report said.

The man-made Gatun Lake, which supplies the canal’s water supply, had been boosted by recent rainfall, leading to an increase in traffic...
